“I always say the truth is best even when we find it unpleasant. Any rat in a sewer can lie. It’s how rats are. It’s what makes them rats. But a human doesn’t run and hide in dark places, because he’s something more. Lying is the most personal act of cowardice there is.” – Nancy Farmer
“A lie has no power whatsoever by its mere utterance; its power emerges when someone else agrees to believe the lie.” – Pamela Meyer
Founder and CEO of Calibrate, Pamela Meyer is an expert when it comes to deception detection. Calibrate was created to train professionals to spot deception during interviews by not only voice detection, but also in eye movements, body language, breathing patterns, and a pool of other ways one can show someone’s being deceptive. Calibrate is currently based in Washington DC and offers a customized curriculum or a private consultation. She is also the author of an amazing book, liespotting, which discusses different ways to tell someone is lying and how to take notice.
In this TED Lecture, Pamela Meyers explains that we are all liars and gives clear examples of infamous people who were caught lying while explaining different ways to detect it with videos and examples.
